New Season of Hair Battle Spectacular

Producers of the Oxygen Network were considering who to choose from to become a judge for their latest competition show, 'Hair Battle Spectacular,' it was only natural that hair extraordinaire Derek J would come to mind. When the Atlanta hairstylist was asked on short notice to be apart of the show, he happily obliged.

The renown fantasy hair stylist will be lending his expertise on Oxygen's fantasy hair show as a judge and mentor to 10 hair stylists from across the country. The show -- which premiers Tuesday August 10th at 10 pm on Oxygen -- will showcase the stylists' talents as they compete for a grand prize of $100,000.

The famous Atlanta stylist -- and owner of Atlanta's J Spot Salon -- describes the show as, " 'Shear Genius' on steroids, with 'Project Runway' and a little of Willy Wonka thrown all together."

For each episode, the contestants go head to head in challenges that require each of them to design and implement over the top hair creations in just a short amount of time.

‘Real Housewives’ Derek J returns to TV

Who can turn Kim Zolciak’s wig issues into a party? Who can turn ordinary hair into “Good Hair”? It’s Atlanta’s Derek J, of course. The “Real Houswives” hair diva is back as a judge on Oxygen’s “Hair Battle Spectacular” on Tuesday.
As the only man who can wear a wedding dress to an Atlanta society function and get away with it, Derek J (top photo) is fresh off of an afterparty at gay club Traxx Atlanta last weekend that celebrated the Bronner Bros. International Hair Show and his role in “Good Hair,” Chris Rock’s 2009 documentary about the annual competition.
The celebrity stylist and local salon owner tells the AJC that he had a blast in Los Angeles filming, judging and mentoring on “Hair Battle.”
“It was definitely different being on the judge’s side as opposed to being a competitor,” he tells the paper.
Just as Derek J makes an impression on “Housewives,” he left such a mark on the Bronner Bros. documentary that producer Chris Rock knew where to turn when his latest project called for chicken wire, wig extensions, props and more hair product than a Saturday night gay bar.
Think Bravo’s lackluster “Shear Genius,” infuse it with gay black ball culture, then magnify it about 1,000 times. Fantasy hair is not wearable hair, people. Stacked, packed and shellacked, it’s show hair. And really, who’s showier than Derek J?
Look for his trademark sass and flash to invigorate the reality format we know so well: Contestants—including Atlantan J-Rok (second photo)—are given a challenge each week, drama ensues, and a catwalk determines who wins and who goes home.
To put even more show in the show, “Hair Battle” also includes a choreographed performance on the final runway as part of the challenge. The ultimate winner walks away with $100,000, so as fun as it is for us, it’s no joke for the contestants.
Sounds like a great appetizer while we wait patiently for the next installment of “Real Housewives” to return this fall.

Derek J Tip for the week...

1. A great moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is the start for style multicultural hair.

2. Avoid using hair products that contain alcohol because it will dry out the hair.

3. Try to avoid using a lot of heat on the hair, sitting a client under the dryer to take out the most of the moisture before blow drying.

4. Relaxer or color... You have to make a choice both chemical services on one head of hair is not a good choice.

5. Steam treatments are great for multicultural to maintain the moisture in the hair.

6. Avoid using a lot of oils on the hair because it will weigh the hair down. If the client has a clean healthy scalp it will produce natural oils.

7. When doing relaxers make sure you only relax the new growth and not overlap the hair to decrease damaging the hair.

8. Use a ceramic or titanium flat iron with heat settings up to 450 degrees to ensure straight free flowing look.
